'STAN COUNTRIES |
The STANS consist of 5 central Asians countries. The bulk of our work in the region is in Kazakhstan where we are partnering with the Kazakhstan Baptist Union. With the collapse of Communism and the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has begun to emerge as an economic leader among all of the former republics.
However, much work needs to be done to reach this country, where there are many rich people, many more poor people and a middle class that is just emerging. The new capital, Astana, is a city where over 700,000 people live now with some estimating that over 1 million people will make it home in just a few years. This is in stark contrast of just a few years ago when it was a sleepy town of around 250,000 people. There is only one Baptist church in the city!
There are over 10 cities where there is still no Baptist work. Our focus is to help the Baptist Union start churches in those 10 cities and in the three major cities in the country: Astana, Almaty and Karaganda.
Currently, we are recruiting Ukrainian believers to move to Kazakhstan as missionaries to help plant churches in those areas where there is little or no work. God has uniquely blessed Ukraine with many churches and believers. He has begun to work in the lives of the Baptist believers there to fulfill the Lord’s Great Commission to “go and make disciples in all the nations.” (Matt. 28:19)
